The hallmark of our country is that we are built on diversity. Under the Constitution, all men are created equal; and, through the efforts of those before us, we celebrate all walks of life today. Oftentimes it can be said that, because we are a melting pot of races, cultures, and identities, many voices are not recognized due to lack of representation. With the design of the newly opened Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the creators did not want to build a space for a black audience alone, but for all Americans. The African-American story is an American story, as central to the country’s narrative as any other, and understanding this history and culture is essential to understanding America.
The building traces the history of the African diaspora through many stages: from the slave trade, to Caribbean settlement, all the way through the architecture of post-bellum American South. For the last 13 years, the committee heading this project has been collecting items to tell its story. This experience leaves visitors understanding history in a more interactive, educational, and valuable way. The hope of the museum is to create a dialogue, promoting healing and celebrating the diversity of the African-American experience as it relates to America today.
What guests might find most fascinating is the architecture of the building itself, a perfect marriage of Greco-Roman design, mixed with traditional West African elements. At one level, the building’s base and shaft elements speak of a classical beauty that is traditional of museum; but, on another level, you see the beauty of the building’s design lies in its replication of the three-tiered crowns used in Yoruban art. It is a complement of Western classical architecture and West African personality.
